My Story

On a trip to Yellowstone National Park in 2022, both my wife and I had our love of wildlife re-awakened as we gazed at bison, bears, owls, antelope, coyotes, and 1000 pound bull elk bugling to attract mates. During the trip, we traveled through Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with a pair of professional wildlife photographers, who taught us about camera settings, light, and composition. Since then, whenever we have the chance, we travel to wildlife refuges, state parks, and other wildlife areas to photograph whatever happens to catch our eye .

I have always been fascinated by the different forms of life that inhabit our planet and how they develop and function, so much so, that I majored in biology and biochemistry in college and graduate school. I spent a 40+ year career as a biomedical scientist trying to help uncover how normal and diseased cells function at the molecular level, sometimes taking pictures of minute cells and cell structures through a microscope with a cooled CCD camera. Now recently retired and with more time on my hands, I am “zooming out” to take pictures of the whole organism to document their beauty, power, and fascinating behaviors.

On this website are a collection of my pictures of birds, animals, insects, and landscapes for you to browse and enjoy! If you would like a print of one of the images, please don’t hesitate to contact me at davidgerystokes@gmail.com.
